Why is the Yangtse River so enchanting?
Gao Xiang

06.02.-22.03.2024
The Yangtze, stretching over 6300 kilometers, is the longest river in China and Asia, and is considered China's “mother river”. It crosses the Tibetan plateau, the Sichuan basin and the plain of the middle and lower Yangtze, giving rise to the brilliant cultures of Liangzhu and Wu-Yue. As a vital artery of transportation and economy in ancient China, the Yangtze witnessed many historical transitions, while fostering, along its course, a great diversity of ecosystems and a profound cultural richness. From the rushing torrents of Jinsha to the poetic mist of Jiangnan (south of the river), via the majestic landscape of the Three Gorges, the Yangtze is much more than a natural wonder. Above all, it's a historical gallery in motion, bearing the millennia-old traces of Chinese civilization, and an essential economic bridge linking East and West.

Gao Xiang traveled along the Yangtze, documenting his observations through a series of sketches. During our discussion in Zurich, he will share his experiences and insights on the evolving landscapes and the lives of the people along the river.

GAO XIANG / 高翔 (*1971) was born in Kunming, China. In 2008, he received a Ph.D. in oil painting from China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he studied under Professor Zhong Han. Gao is an expert on the paintings of Giorgio Morandi. He currently lives and works in Beijing and Kunming. For his projects at Lugu Lake and in the Xishuangbanna region in Yunnan, he has created dialogue over several years with residencies and exhibitions together with European and Chinese artists.
