Yoojoo Kim

Yoojoo Kim (*1961, Seoul, Korea) is a ceramist and photographer who graduated from Seoul National University, obtaining a BFA in Ceramic Art, in 1984 and, two years later, a MFA in Ceramic Design.

Yoojoo Kim's solo exhibitions have been held in various galleries in Seoul, and the first was in 1997. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions and international art fairs including, the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (Yeoju, Korea, 2007), ‘Contemporary Korean Ceramics’ at Dublin Craft Trail (Dublin, Ireland, 2014), the 47th IAC member’s Exhibition at Disseny Hub (Barcelona, Spain, 2016), and the Grand Anniversary Exhibition ‘Contemporary Ceramic Art of the World’ at Marianne Heller Gallery (Heidelberg, Germany, 2018).

Yoojoo Kim emerges as a multifaceted and innovative artist who explores different themes and techniques in her art. Through her Nexus series, which she began producing in 2016, the artist explores the challenges of human relationships. Acknowledging the increasing difficulty in establishing social connections, she uses ceramic objects as metaphors for relationships, symbolising interconnection. The Chinese character for human, “人”, as an image of two lines meeting and supporting each other, further reinforces the theme. Yoojoo Kim employs various mediums, including ceramics, photography, and gum printing, to convey the intricacies of building, sustaining, and reflecting on relationships.
